A subdivision in New Zealand is a block of land, generally farm land, divided up into small parcels and developed into housing. In this case the farm sat on the coast of a beautiful isolated beach and the subdivision was created for holiday homes.

Howard Greive decided to document this transformation. Over several years he gathered images that witnessed both the destruction and construction. As he did so he allowed for the shifting emotions he was feeling. Sub-division became both document and response.

As Greive says, “It was an area I have known since childhood. Naturally any large change creates a dissonance. I wanted to capture these shifting tones. Ultimately it is a book about loss’. ‘A loss for nature, a loss of connection and sadly a loss of my brother who passed during this project.
