Tender Brother Limo offers an intimate, almost shoulder-to-shoulder portrait of American masculinity and male relationships. The images collected in the volume largely emerge from the artist’s direct experience of bachelor parties, situating the work within a lyrical documentary photographic tradition. Amid the excesses and transgressive undertones that characterize these rites of passage—codified celebrations marking the transition toward marriage—moments of intimacy and sensuality surface, alongside a nuanced reflection on male bonding and its inherent ambivalences.

Produced over a fourteen-year period beginning in 2005, Benjamin Sklar’s photographs are grounded in sustained, first-hand involvement. Shot on 35mm black-and-white film, often using disposable or compact point-and-shoot cameras, they adopt a snapshot aesthetic that heightens the sense of proximity between subject and photographer, while amplifying a perception of immediacy and vulnerability. The work thus operates as a reflective device through which to interrogate the dynamics of male socialization, relationships, and identity formation. Within this framework, broader questions emerge: what do traditional narratives of masculinity signify today? And what does it mean, in the present, to be a “good man”?
