ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE (or Death By Camera) – a workshop with Tim Carpenter & Mike Slack – 14-15th November 2023

A two-day, hands-on workshop — a dialogue with your surroundings and with each other, indoors and outdoors —rooted in the themes & arguments of Tim Carpenter’s To Photograph Is To Learn How To Die. The workshop will be held in English.

•Two in-person full days (Nov 14th & 15th) of lecture, assignment, critical review of existing work, and making new work for review.

•One online followup session (DATE TBD) for group critique of assignment

How does the camera affect our relationship with our surroundings and with our selves?  What is the nature of ‘camera’? Of imagination?

Led by photographers Tim Carpenter (author of To Photograph Is To Learn How To Die) and Mike Slack (the book’s editor & designer, and author of Walking in Place 2: Berlin), this two-day workshop will trace connections between the sensations of walking, the pleasures of text, the ‘useful fiction’ of photographic images, and the strange mechanisms of consciousness and ‘self.’ Using the themes and arguments of Carpenter’s book as a starting point, participants will consider the nature of ‘camera’ — and the impetus for making pictures — as they create new images and discuss their existing work.

The workshop will be both conceptual and practical — a discussion of the nature of photographic practice, as well as an exercise in new ways of seeing (and thinking) with the camera. Participants should be prepared to walk around Berlin for a few hours (weather permitting), to bring a few (non-photographic) books to consult, and to edit their work quickly for review.

Reading To Photograph Is To Learn How To Die in advance is not required but is strongly recommended.
