Janine Graubaum – Kosmos Train

Peperoni Books – 2017

Second edition

Janine Graubaum traveled thousands of kilometers in mighty, rumbling trains through Eastern Europe, the Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Macedonia, Albania, Belarus and Russia – not once, but repeatedly. For her not even the way was the goal, but being underway. Waiting at train stations, endless trips through the night, passing landscapes, fleeting but intense encounters with other travelers and looking for some food during stopovers. Of course, her book also talks about the countries she has visited, but even more about the peculiar intimacy among people who have nothing in common except that they are on the same train and go in the same direction. No matter who they are, where they come from and where they are going to.

KOSMOS TRAIN is a journey with no beginning or end. It is a book about being on the move beyond everyday experiences. It is a book about how exciting and easy things can be and how naturally people meet in the microcosm of the trains. Janine Graubaum has found great images for that.
