Saturday 2nd March 2019 – 18:00 – Exhibition 4th March – 2nd April
You are invited to the launch of the new book ‘Cheung Chau Sunrises’ by Michael Wolf. In cooperation with the publisher ‘Buchkunst Berlin’ we will host an artist talk and book signing with the award winning photographer.
The new series and book shows the tremendous natural spectacle of the sunrises over the bay of Hong Kong, and expands the photography of Michael Wolf into the dimensions of painting and freedom.
From his home on Hong Kong’s Cheung Chau shore, Wolf has been photographing sunrises for the past two years, from 5:30am to 7:30am each morning. The fascinating shots of these timeless and as well transient natural spectacles, appear as a contrast to the previous work of Michael Wolf, which addressed the lack of space and the adaptation to economic conditions in large cities. In the context of his socio-critical work, Wolfs Discovery of Heaven and the Horizon is to be understood as a draft of freedom, in a place that is synonymous with extreme working and living conditions.
Michael Wolf was awarded first prize in the World Press Photo competition in 2005 and 2010, and as well an honorable mention in 2011. In 2010, and again in 2017 he was shortlisted for the Prix Pictet photography prize. His work has been exhibited worldwide, and is included in the important collections of photography.
The book ‘Cheung Chau Sunrises’ is also a warm dedication to the photobook publisher and friend Hannes Wanderer, who tragically past away last year.
The talk will be held in German.
