Dayanita Singh – Museum Bhavan – Book Launch – Artist Talk – September 15th

We are very proud to host the artist and photographer Dayanita Singh for the launch of her new book ‘Museum Bhavan’, in cooperation with Steidl Verlag. Taking part in the artist talk will be Stephanie Rosenthal, chief curator of the Hayward Gallery in London, where Singh had a major exhibition in 2013. Museum Bhavan is a boxed set of nine miniature concertina-form books printed at Steidl in Germany, contained in a special handmade box from India. Each book has a different theme from Singh’s archive, from intimate portraits to the human presence in long-used machinery and furniture. The same tension between the mass-produced and the unique is contained in Museum Bhavan, no box is the same, and the viewer is invited to ‘curate’ Singh’s work, allowing her images to be endlessly edited, sequenced, archived and displayed. This is a miniature version of the series of travelling Museum Bhavan’s that Singh sent around the world, self-contained free-standing wooden shelves and seating, with an array of prints to be displayed, making each installation unique. Dayanita Singh has published twelve books, her books such as ‘Privacy’ and ‘Sent A Letter’ have become highly recommended classics in the photobook world. Singh’s works have been presented in exhibitions throughout the world, most notably at the Hayward Gallery in London in 2013, the Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt and the Art Institute of Chicago, both in 2014. Dayanita Singh took part in the Venice Biennale in 2011 and 2013. Book Launch and Artist Talk Friday 15th September 2017 – 7pm dayanitasingh.net steidl.de
